Prayer Activities - All ages

Prayer Jar

Childhood memories like learning to read or ride a
bicycle are precious. One of those memories should
be learning to pray. A great way to get started is a
prayer jar. A habit of praying with others is the one
thing most likely to connect your child to a church
for the rest of his life.
Making the prayer jar itself is simple. Plastic peanut
butter jars are probably safest and easiest to find. For
the jar to work you should make one for each child and
one for yourself. Using a gummed label and magic
marker label one side of the jar “From me to Jesus” and
the other side “From Jesus to Me.” This teaches a child
the two most important parts of prayer: “God listens and
then He Answers.” Help your child (each child) write a
one sentence prayer and put it in the jar. Then he/she
prays the prayer each day until it is answered. Only the
child will know when that is. If he needs help ask who
he would like to pray with. It may be friends from his
Sunday School class, a parent/grandparent or everyone
in your church. No matter how long it takes or how
many people must get involved it is very very important
that the child’s prayer is answered and that he knows it
was answered and that he knows it was God. Without at
least one personal experience with answered prayer why
should he/she believe.

If praying were just saying I could skip the obeying, but praying is staying
In step with the Lord…with all your heart.

Dear parents)- Aside from salvation, God’s greatest gift to us is probably
prayer. Sadly very few of adults or children have even taken it for a test drive. We quit before getting our answer and park prayer along the side of the road for the rest of our lives. Just like riding and bike and reading prayer must be learned in childhood. Our children need our help. We hope that each parent or grandparent reading this message will visit our sister website www.teachustopray.ws. A good place to start is “Prayer Jar”, which can be found by clicking on the take home sheets. May God bless you and keep you and make his face to shine upon you.

WHY WE BELIVE OUR POCKET SCRIPTURES COULD CHANGE YOUR
CHURCH THE NATION AND THE WORLD
OVERNIGHT!!!

*Carrying a scripture with them increases a child’s sense of EXPECTATION that God will make it real. No amount of pure memorization can accomplish this.
*The first thing anyone who works with children learns is that there is never
enough of you to go around to all the children. When faced with this inevitable
problem…a child in need of personal attention…we can give them a sheet of
pocket scriptures fitted to their FELT NEED: fear, anger, loneliness etc. and we
trust God will stand by his word.
*For children, especially the children of divorce, the pocket scriptures also provide a sense of IDENTITY…even a sense of group identity if they know all the children in their church are also carrying a pocket scripture each day of the week.
*Point number four is that our pocket scriptures are rarely if ever a complete verse.

We ask the parents to help the children look up the second half of the verse. It
gives a child the FEEL of a Bible in their hands. It gives parents a starting place in their role as spiritual leaders. Taking two minutes a day to look up just one bible verse is something almost any parent can handle. Such a simple thing can have BIG results because God does all the heavy lifting. This humble beginning is something local pastors can build on, a way to INVOLVE parents.
*It is God’s command in Deut. 11:19, ‘Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds: tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Teach them to you children when you sit at home…so that your days and the days of your children will be many. These words were written 3,000 years BP (before pockets). They are an old idea, God’s idea. They make me think of the children in my first class of preschoolers especially the four who died before the age of 18. I have no way of knowing if a scripture in their pocket would have saved their lives but I believe with all my heart that:

Pocket Scriptures are the least we can do…THE VERY VERY VERY LEAST.

The ACTS prayer

Adoration – praise Confession – sorry Thanksgiving – thanks Supplication – ask

A is for Adoration. Adoration means praise. This is a time in prayer to praise God just for who He is. You can say things like, "God you are so wonderful," "God you are my Maker." Anything you want to say to let God know that you know He is in control of your life and everything in heaven and on earth.

C is for Confession. The Bible tells us that God will forgive our sins, if we tell Him what we've done wrong. This is a time to ask God to forgive you. You must tell God the specific things that you have done wrong and you feel sorry about. Once you confess, your sins will be forgiven, no questions asked!

T is for Thanksgiving. Now is the time to thank God for all the wonderful things you have. You can thank him for the world, for your puppy, for your brothers and sisters, and anything else you just feel like thanking God for.

S is for Supplication. That's a big word! It means praying for people that you know that need God. You can pray for a friend that you want to be a Christian like you. You can pray for family or friends who are sick and need God to heal them. This is a time to come before God with special requests.

Heart broken prayer

Draw on the board or on a sheet of paper a heart, reminding the kids that God loves them. Ask them to tell you some things that might break God’s heart (lying, stealing, cheating etc), draw a jagged line in the middle of the heart to show how His heart is broken when we don’t live as He wants us to. Say sorry to God for breaking His heart and thank Him that when we confess our sins He will forgive us. 1 John 1:9

Scrapbook prayers Make up a book that has photos of all your friends, family, missionaries and others who you want to pray for. You can also use this in Kids Church, have pictures of things to thank God for and people to pray for.

Lucky DipMake up a box that the child can get their hand into and inside the box place prayers written out which the child can pull out and read out for the family or for Kids Church.

Hand PrayersCan get the kids to draw a hand on a piece of paper then get them to think of people they know in each of the five categories that they can pray for.Thumb – those who are far away - family members/missionariesPointer – those who point the way for us - leaders/ teachersMiddle finger – those in authority over us – church leaders/government leadersRing finger – those that we love – family/friendsLittle finger – those that are sick or suffering
